Oxenfree 2s villains are sending spooky signals to the original game. Everything here hinges on narrative, and Oxenfree does not disappoint. A screenshot of the Oxenfree characters in a room full of radios and electronic equipment. But, while you control all of the action from its stunning 2D perspective, the focus here is a slow exploration – both of the environment and the interaction between characters. Oxenfree offers more moment-to-moment control than many interactive narratives. Happiness, horror, and relief are all believable – as is the panic as they see friends drop from windows. While their tiny forms manage to inject personality with their animation, this is nothing compared to how much emotion their voices convey. This is all, in no small part, down to the voice acting. This while watching the gang of teens seemingly die over and over becomes affecting. The creepy voices of the voices on the radio send shivers down your spine as they cycle through stations to communicate. It is chilling, which is impressive considering the comic 2D look. You repeatedly witness your friends die, only to reappear in seconds possessed and with glowing eyes. These changes begin unnervingly, but quickly become devastating. Cryptic messages start to pour through and within moments everything goes wrong.įrom here you are plunged into a cryptic horror story, filled with time loops that have you reliving events - albethey slightly altered. In the caves you find an odd disturbance that you can tune into with your radio. Looking for a way to escape from Clarissa, you and Jonas break off from the group to explore a cave, which is where things start to get… freaky. Nearly a year after going live, Apple Arcade has grown its library from 60 titles to over 130 stylized, family-friendly, and often contemplative indie games. You use the intuitive controls to pick between responses to questions and join in with conversations. These opening moments set the scene and establish the dynamics between the characters. One of the best app on Openings we highly recommend it. We paid money for this but there is no built-in engine. No idea what the percentages mean, at least a one paragraph instruction on how the app works would be nice. Would not recommend without major revisions. Not nearly as helpful as some conventional chess books of various openings. Needs some instructions if a beginner or intermediate level player is to benefit. We worked with Nick Millhiser (of Holy Ghost!), who also produced half of our album A Way Forward. Once we made that change it was easier to get loose with the structure and have fun with it. Not wanting to do that, we decided to change the rhythm to turn it into a shuffle (think ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ by Tears for Fears, ‘Reelin’ in the Years’ by Steely Dan, ‘Higher Ground’ by Stevie Wonder). Once we settled on Broken Social Scene and this song, we realized that, loving ‘Stars and Sons’ so much, if we didn’t transform it in a fundamental way we would end up just copying it straight up. Drew is also on Covers of Covers, covering Stars’ “The Loose Ends Will Make Knots.”ĭevaney had this to say about their cover in a statement to Under the Radar: “It was tough choosing who to cover from the list-so many of these bands have been really important to us through the years. Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew was one of several musicians to appear on the fold out cover of our O Canada Issue in 2005 ( Issue 11), appearing alongside members of fellow north of the border artists Metric, Tegan and Sara, The Dears, The New Pornographers, Stars, and others. Their second album, A Way Forward, came out last November via PIAS. Nation of Language is a Brooklyn-based synth-pop trio that consists of Ian Devaney (vocals, guitar, and percussion), Aidan Noell (synth and vocals), and Michael Sue-Poi (bass). “We tried a few different ways of approaching the cover before we gave up and just dove in, playing the song as we would if it was a Cults song. We also love its lyrics as a critique of social structures that the French do better than anyone. It always stands out amongst all the other tunes with its extended intro, mellow verses, and bright and punchy instrumentation. “We’ve had ‘Bourgeois’ on our tour playlist for two album cycles now, meaning we’ve heard it in clubs hundreds of times. “When we saw the list of bands that had been on the covers over the years our first thought was, ‘Wow, that’s a lot of great bands.’ Our second thought was, ‘Let’s do that Phoenix song.’ I’m looking back, UTR might have been our first time our music was ever printed about in a magazine, which was an amazing and bizarre out of body moment. Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion of Cults collectively had this to say about their cover in a statement to Under the Radar: “We’re very happy to be included in celebrating Under the Radar magazine as we’ve been big fans for over a decade now. Phoenix were on the cover of Issue 45 in 2013, in honor of their album Bankrupt! (which featured “Bourgeois”). We are also donating $1.00 from every physical album sold and every full album download purchased to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund ( which “provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians and music industry workers who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems.”Ĭults are releasing a 10th anniversary reissue of their self-titled debut album and recently shared the bonus track “Valentine” (fittingly released on Valentine’s Day). The album also features Alex Lahey, Hatchie, Kevin Drew, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Sondre Lerche, Girl Ray, Piroshka, Strand of Oaks, Oceanator, C Duncan, NZCA LINES, Ora the Molecule, James Yorkston, and Water From Your Eyes.Ĭovers of Covers will be available on CD and digitally, with cassette tape and vinyl releases in the works too. In December we announced the album shared its first two singles: Grandaddy’s cover of Metric’s “Blindness” and EMA’s cover of Modest Mouse’s “Trailer Trash.” Then in January we shared two more singles from it: Cassandra Jenkins’ cover of Animal Collective’s “It’s You” and Peter Bjorn and John’s cover of The Divine Comedy’s “Songs of Love.” In honor of our 20th anniversary we approached some of our favorite musicians and asked them to cover any song by any artist who had been on the front or back cover of our print issue over the years. Today we are sharing two last pre-release singles from it: Cults’ cover of Phoenix’s “Bourgeois” and Nation of Language’s cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Stars and Sons.” Listen to both below. Covers of Covers, our first album, is due out this Friday via American Laundromat ( preorder it here). The Game Boy, NES and Super NES apps are available to all subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online. This time they include released in 1995 for Game Boy: Kirby’s Dream Land 2 the one from 1991 by Data East and known as Burger Time Deluxe 1993 Side Pocket from the same study and the shoot ’em up arcade by Namco Xevious. While not the most realistic pool game around, both in terms of its implementation of the rules and its often questionable ball physics, Side Pocket is just a great fun game to enjoy either solo or with friends, and a welcome inclusion to the Nintendo Switch Online library. Along the way, there are also trick shot challenges that can be played as their own standalone minigame, and a couple of two-player modes to round out the package. It’s an arcade-style billiards game that plays pretty fast and loose with the actual rules of pool in favour of puzzle game-esque scoring, whereby you get big bonuses for potting balls in numerical order and potting multiple in succession without having to take any setup shots in between.Įach stage in the main single-player game tasks you with earning a particular number of points (after bonuses) in order to progress. Xevious (NES)ĭata East’s Side Pocket is a follow-up to Pocket Gal, which we last covered some time ago in The History of Lewd. With the Nintendo Switch Online version, you can choose to play the game in original monochrome style, or with the “colourised” option that the Game Boy Colour and Game Boy Advance systems provided when playing original Game Boy games. The result is a “best of both worlds” sort of situation: a copy of BurgerTime that has all the enjoyable action of the original, and which doesn’t make you want to throw things at your television. Not only does it revamp the Data East arcade classic with cutesy graphics and music, but it also smooths out the notoriously sharp difficulty curve seen in both the original arcade version and its excellent NES port. With a low-resolution dot matrix display that could only display four shades of grey, the original Game Boy was obviously never going to provide the “true” arcade experience - so many developers decided to make custom versions of classic games for the platform.īurgerTime Deluxe is a great example of this. One of the interesting things about the Game Boy is that while it played host to numerous arcade ports, the best examples of these were actually complete reimaginings of the games in question that bore the Game Boy’s specific capabilities into account. It’s a great addition to the franchise, one of the best games on Game Boy, and definitely worth your time if you have Nintendo Switch Online. Kirby’s Dream Land 2 isn’t a hugely difficult game to make it to the end of, but it is notoriously one of the most challenging to get 100% completion in. With Kine, Kirby can also inhale underwater, which he cannot normally do. The emphasis here is much more on the use of the animal companions to proceed: Rick the hamster runs faster and doesn’t slip on ice Coo the owl can fly and allows Kirby to inhale while flying, which he cannot normally do and Kine the sunfish allows the ability to swim through water, even that which has a strong current. Unlike the first Kirby’s Dream Land, Kirby’s Dream Land 2 does feature the ability for Kirby to absorb abilities from certain enemies - though not every enemy. It features the same familiar leisurely paced platforming of its predecessor, with the addition of some animal companions who will help Kirby out in various situations. Following hot on the heels of the first Kirby’s Dream Land - Kirby’s first ever adventure, if you weren’t familiar - comes this Game Boy sequel. Yes, we are still using similar items much more sensitively today. I have made two models of this – one is also in the Cerezi museum in Istanbul and one is in a mosque in Cambridge.Īre these clocks similar in structure to timepieces we still use today? With this mechanical calendar that he designed, you can see what month of the year we are in, what day of the month it is, the image of the moon in the night sky and in which sign of the horoscope it is in. However, whether someone else built or made them later, I don’t know.Ĭan you tell us about the mechanical moon calendar you have made?īurini is a scholar and engineer who lived 800 years ago. When I was making them no one else was making them. How many of these exist in the world? How many people have made these kinds of projects before? The clock that was built by me for the first time ever is in the Cezeri Museum in Istanbul now. What makes my works so special is that they were designed over 500 years ago, and no working examples have been made by anyone but me. The biggest factor in directing me to this type of project is that I graduated from mechanical technician school. I became interested in clock making when I moved my workshop to the museum because there were many examples of mechanical clocks in this museum. How did you become interested in clockmaking? What in your background led you to this career and these types of projects? I found Galileo’s pendulum plans on the internet and decided to make one since I have always been interested in the technology of the Renaissance period. Hi Ersan! Could you explain how you became involved with the Galileo Design Pendulum? We caught up with Ersan to find out more about his projects. It now is displayed proudly in the Cezeri Museum in Istanbul. Designed by the great scientist Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) as an early method of measuring time, Ersan, who is also a former member of the Turkish National Chess team and Chess City Champion for Ankara, was the first person to make a working replica of this mechanism in 2016. Perhaps most notable of all is the Galileo Pendulum. The walls of his workshop are decorated with masterful examples of his work, the intricate interior motors playing on exposed within the bell-jars that line the shelves of his busy workshop.Įrsan has a loyal global clientele who flock to him for all repairs and reconstructions but it is his model-making that has always been his passion. Ersan has accomplished many landmark achievements and pioneered several historically significant projects. Having moved to England from Turkey two years ago, Ersan has cemented his reputation as an exceptional model-maker on a global scale. The Bespoke Metal Workshop is the home to our resident clockmaker, metal-worker and watch-repairer Ersan Dogan. It's heady stuff for a kids' movie-hell, these days, for any studio movie. But it's also a story about what happens when passion fades and old lovers drill deep in search of reserves of affection that time has buried. Yes, this is a story about a talking doll who shouts, "There's a snake in my boot!" when you pull his string. But what makes "Toy Story 3" cartoon canon fodder is its emotional core. You'll be fine.") When they don't, they conjure that sense of "magic" that all commercial art aimed at children strives for but is most often overshot. (Plunked down in a group of actorly toys, Woody is assured by a stuffed unicorn, "We do a lot of improv here. The best, funniest moments-in a script penned by four Pixar veterans, including studio chief John Lasseter-come often from an adult's sensibility. The pop-culture references are clever enough to feel fresh, even when they tread on well-worn turf ("Star Wars," Ken and Barbie). There is a lot in "Toy Story 3" that entertains. Heartbroken, they steal away to a nearby daycare center that seems, at first, like a paradise of constant affection compared to the cooling relationship they left back at home. He hasn't played with his toys in years and even refers to them once as "junk." When Andy's mother mistakes an attic-bound garbage bag for rubbish, the toys' faith in their beloved owner is shaken. Only in "Toy Story 3," Andy is 17 and about to head to college. Woody (voiced once again by Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), and their anthropomorphic toy friends are separated by mishap from young Andy, their owner, and must make their way back to him. Pixar's almost speed bump–free track record (sorry, "Cars") dates back to its first picture: 1995's "Toy Story." The third-and presumably final-installment in the studio's signature franchise is driven by the same basic plot element that guided the first two. They also make money by the crateful-defying the conventional, cynical wisdom that the best a film driven by a strong artistic vision can achieve in the marketplace is niche success. Its films are better-written, more visually stunning, more emotionally moving, more thought provoking, more socially aware than 99 percent of the rest of what Hollywood insists on offering the public-and what the public, if this year's box office is to be believed, insists on sending back to the kitchen. "Hopefully, eventually people will just vote with their heart and if they truly think that a film moved them the most or excited them the most and it happens to be animated, that someday an animated film could win Best Picture.Pixar makes the best movies of any American studio. I think we have a ways to go, but I think the fact that we made it into that category twice now, we have accomplished something. I think the fact that two years running now we have had animated films that have made it and received Best Picture nominations show that the walls between live action and animation are becoming a bit more permeable. When asked if the Best Picture nominations for "Toy Story 3" (and last year's for "Up") meant the Academy was becoming more accepting of animation, Unkrich said, "I do. And does this mean we did? I guess, finally!" Not only were we having to make the next Pixar film which is a huge responsibility in and of itself, but to make a third, when third films are always terrible, right? They're never, ever good! And somehow I guess we're masochistic we thought we could somehow pull it off. "I like to call it 'fear-based filmmaking,' because each and every day we kind of lived in fear of messing it up, and then it was up to us to make the best movie that we possibly could. After accepting the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, Lee Unkrich told reporters that directing the film felt like "a huge, crushing responsibility" after the success of the first two "Toy Story" films. |
